The first landing on the red planet was made by the Soviet Mars-3  v  1971, data transmission stopped after 14.5 seconds.
The first flyby survey, the first close-up images of the planet - the American Mariner 4 in 1964.
And, finally, the first images from the surface of Mars, the first direct studies of the atmosphere and soil, the first experiments to search for life on Mars - the American  "Viking-1", in 1976.
Eight artificial satellites are currently operating in orbits around Mars. On the surface of the planet - 3 automatic stations
